I spent between February and May 2016 cycling Europe. It was a year after the onset of the refugee crisis, and as part of the trip I volunteered in Calais and cycled 1,200km in 10 days for charity. In a last-ditch plea for donations to get to the £5k target, though, I just upped the ante and did 1,200km in 85 hours.

• Route: London to Athens.
• Distance: 6,000km.
• Countries: UK, France, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro, Albania, and Greece.
• Highlights: France in winter; climbing the Alps; visiting Florence, Ravenna, Padua, and Ferrara; climbing the Dolomites; Croatian island hopping; everywhere I went and everybody I met in Albania; wild camping in the Peloponnese; and the Cotswolds!
• Lowlights: Seeing the conditions of the barely functioning camp in Dunkerque.
